SUVs have a higher ground clearance than cars, which can make them safer than cars when driving in the snow. Since they're higher off the ground, SUVs also offer better visibility for driving over larger amounts of snow.

You might find yourself spinning tires and unable to move at a stop sign simply because your vehicle isn't high enough off the ground. While driving on snow, avoid cars with a ground clearance of 4-6 inches. Instead, try to use vehicles with at least 8-10 inches of ground clearance.

Some sedans would fare better than most SUVs on the road. Now, if the roads get covered with a foot of snow, then all sedans would get stranded, even all-wheel-drive ones. SUVs have more ground clearance when the snow gets deep, though.
